The first round of the Presidential election took place on 20 August 2009.

Hamed Karzai 49.67%
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah 30.59%
Ramazan Bashardost 10.46%
Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai 2.94%
Mirwais Yasini 1.03%

and a further 27 candidates who each received less than 1% of the vote

Turnout – approx 32%
Votes: 4,823,090

As no candidate received 50%, a second round run-off was scheduled for 7 November. However Dr Abdullah withdrew from the election on 1 November. As a result, on 2 November the Independent Election Commission announced the cancellation of the run-off and declared Hamid Karzai the winner by default.
