The first three rounds of elections took place on 8 and 9 February 2008. Neither of the two candidates, Václav Klaus and Jan Švejnar, achieved 140 votes (Klaus was one short of the required total).

On 15 February the second election took place and a further candidate, Jana Bobošíková, was proposed by the Communist Party. However she withdrew her candidacy before the first round of voting.
