Indirect elections (only Members of Parliament and regional deputies are entitled to vote) took place 8-10 May. In the first three ballots no candidate obtained 673 votes (the two-thirds majority necessary for a win). On 10 May the fourth ballot took place and, as only a majority is required on this ballot, the candidate of the centre-left coalition, Giorgio Napolitano, was duly elected.
