In the 2006 election, held on 22nd January, Anibal Cavaco Silva received 50.54% of the vote in the first round and avoided the need for a second round. There were six candidates standing and the results were:

Aníbal Cavaco Silva PSD, CDS/PP* 50.54%
Manuel Alegre Independent 20.74%
Mário Soares PS 14.31%
Jerónimo de Sousa PCP, PEV 8.64%
Francisco Louçã BE 5.32%
António Garcia Pereira PCTP/MRPP 0.44%

The turnout was 61.53%.

* Aníbal Cavaco Silvawas supported by the PSD (Social Democratic Party) and the CDS/PP (Democratic and Social Centre/People’s Party).

Aníbal Cavaco Silva was sworn in as the 19th President of Portugal on 9th March 2006. He was previously Prime Minister from 1985 to 1995.
