An indirect election took place on 12 February 2017.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier had the support of 931 (73.89%) of the potential 1260 votes in the Electoral College and was supported by the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Christian Social Union (CSU), Alliance ’90/The Greens, Free Democratic Party (FDP) and South Schleswig Voters’ Association (SSW). There were four other candidates in Sunday’s election.
