The election took place in two rounds, on 22 November and 6 December 2009. In the first round results were as follows:

Traian Băsescu (Democratic Liberal Party) 32.44%
Mircea Geoană (Social Democratic Party + Conservative Party) 31.15%
Crin Antonescu (National Liberal Party) 20.02%
Corneliu Vadim Tudor (Greater Romania Party) 5.56%
Hunor Kelemen (Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania) 3.83%
Sorin Oprescu (Independent) 3.18%
George Becali (New Generation Party – Christian Democratic) 1.91%

and a further 5 candidates, each receiving less than 1% of the vote.

Registered electors: 18,347,397
Votes: 9,946,748
Turnout: 54.37%

In the second round runoff, which took place on 6 December 2009, Mircea Geoană received 49.66% of the vote. Traian Băsescu received 50.33% and was therefore elected President. Turnout was 58.02%.
