An indirect election took place on 20 July 2012 when the members of the Legislative Assembly, or Fono, voted to elect the head of state (O le Ao o le Malo).

Tufuga Efi was the only candidate, and was re-elected unopposed. He had been nominated by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi and seconded by Palusalue Fa’apo II, the leader of the opposition.
