19,497 candidates for 500 seats

Published

The Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) has announced that 19,497 candidates have submitted papers for the 28th November general election.

There are 500 seats in the National Assembly or lower house and the last elections took place in 2006. With such a large number of candidates, around 38 for each seat, the opportunities for violence are likely to be greater.

Political parties have been meeting in an African Union (AU) and Institute for Peace and Security Studies sponsored conference in Addis Ababa to try and find solutions to prevent violence in the election.
