Aung San Suu Kyi to run for parliament

Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) has confirmed that she will stand in the Yangon parliamentary seat in the 1st April by elections.

A total of 48 seats are to be contested; 40 in the lower House of Representatives or Pyithu Hluttaw (440 seats), six seats in the upper House of Nationalities or Amyotha Hluttaw (224 seats) and two for regional assemblies.

The move will legitimise the elections and give an additional boost to the government which has been showing signs of relaxing the previous military grip on civilian affairs.
