Bayrou to vote for Hollande

Published

In a further damaging blow to the chances of incumbent president Nicolas Sarkozy, the centrist presidential candidate François Bayrou has said that he will be voting for the socialist candidate François Hollande on Sunday.

Mr Bayrou said that this was a personal choice and that he was not advising the 9% of the voters in the first round who voted for him as to how they should vote. Mr Bayrou said that he was concerned at the move to the right which Sarkozy had been promulgating in recent weeks which would pitch Frenchman against Frenchman. More than thirty parliamentarians and local government councillors from Mr Bayrou’s Democratic Movement (MoDem) have said that they will be following his lead.

Meanwhile, Sarkozy is also adjudged to have lost the TV debate on Wednesday. An IFOP poll for ‘Paris Match’ magazine suggests that 42% felt that Hollande was more convincing whilst 34% felt the same of Sarkozy.
