Capriles will face Chavez
Henrique Capriles Radonski, a Congressman, and the current governor of the state of Miranda comfortably won the opposition primary yesterday to take on President Hugo Chavez later this year.
A larger than expected 2.9 million voters turned out to support the primary, designed to create a united front against Chavez. Capriles, a centre left candidate, took 62% of the vote with Pablo Perez coming second on 32%.
Unlike other candidates, Capriles has taken a non confrontational line against Chavez. Instead of attacking him he says that many of his programmes are good but haven’t worked and that he, Capriles, is the one to get them working. With around 50% support Chavez will be very tough to defeat, especially as he has gone into a massive pre-election spending spree to woo disgruntled voters over.
