Iowa caucus provides dead heat

Published

The Iowa caucus for the Republican presidential candidate has provided a near dead heat between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum with 99% of the votes counted. Both candidates received slightly under 25% each (Romney 24.6% and Santorum 24.5%) with Ron Paul coming third on 21.4%. Other candidates were well behind in this first contest of a very long season.

The next contest will be in New Hampshire on 10th January with the primary selecting 12 delegates for the Republican National Convention in August.

An opinion poll by Suffolk University puts Mitt Romney on 43% in the New Hampshire race, with Ron Paul on 16% and Jon Huntsman on 10%. Newt Gingrich sits on 9% in the poll and Rick Santorum has 5%.
