Romney wins Illinois

Mitt Romney won the latest round of the Republican presidential candidate battle by taking Illinois comfortably yesterday. With most of the votes counted Romney was on 46.7% of the vote with Rick Santorum on 35%. Ron Paul came third with 9.3% and Newt Gingrich took 8%. Romney will pick up the majority of the 54 bound delegates available.

Polls for the next contest in Louisiana on Saturday suggest that Rick Santorum is ahead of Mitt Romney by 37% to 24% respectively. Newt Gingrich also has a strong showing in the state with 21% predicted whilst Ron Paul languishes on 3%.
