Santorum comes from nowhere to win three states

Published

Rick Santorum, who won the first caucus of the year in Iowa and then appeared to be fading, appears to have won all three of yesterday’s caucuses. Votes took place in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri. In Colorado, Santorum appears to have taken 40.2% of the vote and Mitt Romney 34.9%. Newt Gingrich took 12.8% and Ron Paul took 11.8%.

In Minnesota, Santorum came first with 44.8% of the vote and Ron Paul came second with 27.2%. Mitt Romney, the favourite up to now, received just 16.9%. Newt Gingrich received 10.7%.

In Missouri, Santorum took 55.2% of the vote. Romney took 25.3% and Ron Paul took 12.2%.

The results of these caucuses are non-binding (see yesterday’s news item on the contests) but they do give Rick Santorum added impetus, with Newt Gingrich now looking as though he is fading.
