Santorum quits

Published

Rick Santorum, the only real obstacle stopping Mitt Romney from taking the Republican presidential candidacy, announced yesterday that he was withdrawing from the race.

Mr Santorum did not give any indication as to why he was leaving but he did hint at personal reasons. He came from nowhere to win the first contest of the season in Iowa and went on to win ten more states. Always troubled by the amount of funding he had available for the campaign he was overwhelmed by the Romney campaign in a number of states where it mattered.

In theory Mitt Romney still has to face Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, but in practical terms they are so far behind that the race is in effect all over. The next primaries are due to take place on 24th April in Pennsylvania.
