Or should that be Tweets? Incumbent president, Nicolas Sarkozy, announced last night that he would be standing for a second term in the presidential election to take place on 22nd April.

Hours before his announcement Sarkozy joined Twitter and posted his first tweet. By close of the day (he posted his last tweet at 2300 hrs), he had a total of eleven tweets and has already gathered 66,200 followers.

His main rival, Francois Hollande, has been on Twitter since 9th January 2009, has made 1745 tweets and has 154,434 followers.

In the most recent opinion poll by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) Francois Hollande has maintained his lead, taking an estimated 30% in round one, to Sarkozy’s 25.5%. Marine Le Pen is on 17.5% and Francois Bayrou is on 11.5%. In a second round match, Hollande would get 57% and Sarkozy 43% according to the poll.

In an interview last week Sarkozy said that his campaign would be focussing on immigration, work and the welfare state.
