Sarkozy set to lose first round

Published

Increasingly the polls are suggesting that incumbent president Nicolas Sarkozy is likely to lose the first round of the French presidential election to his socialist rival Fran├žois Hollande on Sunday (22nd April).

A CSA poll suggests that Hollande will take around 29% of the poll whilst Sarkozy will take 24%. A BVA poll puts Hollande on 29.5% and Sarkozy on 27.5%. Their closest rival in the race is Marine Le Pen of the far right National Front (FN) who is on around 16% of the vote.

That means that both men will face each other in the second round of voting to take place on Sunday 6th May. The opinion polls seem to be pretty similar in suggesting that Fran├žois Hollande will take 56% of the vote whilst Nicolas Sarkozy will take 44%.
