287 candidates vying for 50 places

Elections for the 50 seat National Assembly or Majlis Al-Umma take place today.

There are 287 candidates standing for the 50 seat parliament, with 400,296 registered voters. Polling will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time across the five multi-member constituencies.

Political parties are not permitted in Kuwait but there are broad blocs within the parliament and the opposition have vowed to continue the standoff with the government to see greater democracy and an end to corruption.
