Alexander Van der Bellen is Austria’s new President

Published

The pro-European Independent/Green candidate in the presidential election second round runoff held yesterday has won, beating off a right wing Eurosceptic candidate.

Alexander Van der Bellen, standing as an Independent but actually from the left-wing The Greens – The Green Alternative, took 53.4% of the vote with 68% of the votes counted. His opponent, Norbert Hofer of the right-wing and Eurosceptic Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), took 46.6% and conceded defeat overnight.

Mr Hofer is reported to have Tweeted “Dear friends, I would like to thank you, you have supported me magnificently and I am incredibly sad that it didn’t work out, I would have liked to have taken care of our Austria, I congratulate Alexander Van der Bellen on his success and I ask all Austrians to stick together and work together, we are all Austrians, no matter which ballot box we chose. Long live our home Austria.”
