Alexander Van der Bellen is the new Austrian President

Alexander Van der Bellen of the left-wing The Greens – The Green Alternative has won the second round runoff of the Austrian presidential election. The majority was a very small one and decided on postal votes from overseas.

Van der Bellen took 50.3% of the vote and Norbert Hofer representing the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) took 49.7% with just 31,026 votes separating the two men. In actual votes Van der Bellen took 2,254,484 votes and Hofer took 2,223,458. The turnout for Sunday’s poll was surprisingly high at 72.75%.

Alexander Van der Bellen (72) will succeed Heinz Fischer as president of Austria on 8th July.
