ANC suffers losses in local elections

A survery published annually by the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) has shown that the African National Congress (ANC) has suffered an overall loss of 38 wards since the last local government elections took place in 2006.

Overall gains of 24 seats have been made by the Democratic Alliance (DA) over the same period, whilst independents had a net gain of 15 seats. The Inkatha Freedom Party has lost a total of 10 wards since 2006.
