Andalucía to hold election in March

Published

An election for the Andalucía autonomous community will be held on 25th March.

The election was announced by the socialist premier, José Antonio Griñán. Although the socialists have ruled in Andalucía for the past thirty years, opinion polls suggest that the People’s Party (PP) led by Javier Arenas might win for the first time.

The People’s Party won the recent general election and a win in Andalucía would indicate the depth of the disenchantment with the former Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE). The PP government have recently introduced an austerity package of €8.9 billion which included plans for tax increases which is a reversal of their election manifesto pledge.
