ANO emerge strongest from Regional elections

Finance Minister Andrej Babis’ ANO party has emerged as the victor in local elections and the first round of the Senate elections which took place on the 7th and 8th October.

ANO which is part of the ruling coalition beat the main coalition Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) of Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka in nine of the 13 regions and it has the highest number of candidates for Senator going through to the Senate second round runoff on 14th and 15th October.

In the regional elections overall ANO won 176 seats whilst the ČSSD won 125 seats. The third member of the governing coalition, the Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People’s Party (KDU–ČSL) took 42 seats and fifth place. The once mighty Civic Democratic Party (ODS) came fourth with 76 seats and was beaten by the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) who took 86 seats and third place.

Turnout in the regional elections was 34.6% and in the Senate it was 33.5%.
