APC win Gubernatorial elections

Published

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) made sweeping gains in the gubernatorial elections on Saturday as predicted.

The APC took 19 of the 29 governorships contested at the election whilst the previously ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was reduced to seven governorships. The All Progressives Grand Alliance retained Anambra state.

The PDP were reduced to being a regional party, taking states only in the south with the exception of Gombe state in the north-east. The PDP did take Rivers state back from the APC, but that was because the former governor had defected to the APC in 2013.

Taraba state was still to be declared and in Abia state a number of results from three polling centres were inconclusive and may require a re-ballot later in the month. The situation in Imo state is also unclear with some news agencies reporting an APC win whilst others are saying that INEC has not confirmed the results.
