APRC sweeps up most contested seats

Published

The ruling Alliance for Patriotic Re-Orientation and Construction (APRC) of President Yahya Jammeh has swept up most of the 25 seats contested in yesterday’s general election.

Of the 48 seats up for grabs, 23 APRC candidates were elected unopposed. Of the remainder the Independent Electoral Commission has published provisional results which suggest that the APRC has picked up a further 18 seats, giving them 41 seats so far in the National Assembly.

The National Reconciliation Party (NRP) has picked up one seat and two independents have picked up seats. The results for four seats have still to be announced.

Turnout was very low with eight of the opposition parties boycotting the election.
