Around 8000 candidates stand in election

The Egyptian electoral commission has announced the numbers of candidates standing in the forthcoming general election which starts on 28th November.

There are 6,591 candidates standing for the 498 seat National Assembly (lower house), with 590 lists for the one third proportional quotient.

There are 2,036 candidates for the 270 seat Shura (upper house) with 272 lists for the proportional quotient.

Prior to February this year both houses were dominated by ex President Hosni Mubarak’s National Democratic Party. Both houses were dissolved on 2nd February and an interim government installed.
