Belarus votes for a new House of Representatives


Belarus is holding a general election today under a new system whereby it will elect 110 members of the House of Representatives in a first past the post system.

As always the Independents who are largely pro-government are expected to win the majority of seats. Although this time an alliance of opposition parties is standing under the banner Prava Vybora (The Right to Choose).

There are 485 candidates standing in the election with 6,990,696 eligible voters entitled to vote at 3,111 polling stations between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. By 10th September 24.31% of voters had voted early with advanced voting continuing until 7 p.m. local time on eve of poll.
