Bermuda to hold general election

Published

Prime Minister Paula Cox has decided to call a general election for 17th December and has asked Governor George Fergusson to dissolve parliament. Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory.

The last election was held in December 2007. Two parties contested the elections, the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) who won 22 of the seats in the 36 seat House of Assembly of Bermuda (the lower house). The United Bermuda Party won 14 seats.

The upper house or Senate is not involved in the election because all 11 seats are appointed by the Governor.
