Bhattarai is new PM

Dr Baburam Bhattarai of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (UPCN-M) has been elected as the next prime minister of Nepal.

Dr Bhattarai received 340 votes whilst his rival, Ram Chandra Paudel of the Nepali Congress (NC) received 235 votes. The NC have said that they will remain in opposition despite being invited to join in a national consensus government by the new prime minister.

Dr Bhattarai has already been congratulated by Indian prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and has been invited to visit India.
