By elections to be held in war zones

Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has passed a decree (No. 379) calling parliamentary by-elections to fill five seats. The vacancies have occurred because two MPs have defected to the opposition, one has been appointed an ambassador and two have been made governors of provinces.

The by-elections will take place in Aleppo, Hama, Idlib and Hasakeh the first four are all subject to intense fighting between government forces and rebel forces including the Free Syria Army.

The elections will take place on 1st December.
