Cambodia voting today

Published

Voters are going to the polls today in Cambodia. Around 9.6 million people are registered to vote between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. and one third of electors are below the age of 30.

Although there are eight parties contesting the 123 seats, only two parties count in Cambodia: the ruling Cambodian People’s Party of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian National Rescue Party run by Sam Rainsy.

Rainsy has only recently returned from exile, having received a pardon for criminal convictions which he contends were politically motivated. However he is barred from standing in these elections, supposedly because it was too late to add him to the ballot papers.

Hun Sen has dominated Cambodian politics for the last 28 years and there is little doubt that he will win today’s elections.
