Benin

Campaign starts despite protests

Published

The Autonomous National Electoral Committee of Benin (CENI) launched the presidential election campaign on Friday (18 February 2011) and confirmed that polling day would be Sunday 6th March.

The CENI said that 3,511,373 voters had been registered on the permanent computerised voter lists (LENI). However, eleven opposition candidates have said that up to 1.3 million voters have not been registered. The CENI have explained that they believe this to be due to the use of old registers and the migrant nature of some voters.

The opposition candidates, despite their concerns, have decided not to boycott the election.

Meanwhile the campaign for the incumbent president Boni Yayi is said to be poised to put up 16 million posters.

The CENI has estimated that the campaign will cost 8.5 billion CFA francs (approx £11m).
