Published

With just over 46% of the vote counted, Jorge Capitanich, the incumbent governor of Chaco province, claimed victory with 65.73% of the vote.

His closest rival, Roy Nikish of the Radical Civic Union (UCR) came second with 30.63%.

In his victory speech Capitanich thanked President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and also made reference to former president Néstor Kirchner, saying “I dedicate this triumph to a great friend of mine who lies illuminated in heaven.” (Quote from Buenos Aires Herald).

Chaco province was the last of the provincial elections before the big test on 23rd October when Argentina will hold its general election along with contests in a further 14 provinces.

Yesterday was also the official start of the presidential election campaign.
