Communists seize capital

Published

The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) have won control of Chisinau, with their mayoral candidate, Igor Dordon beating the incumbent Liberal Party (PL) mayor Dorin Chirtoacă.

Dordon took 52% of the vote, with Chirtoacă managing just 42%. The Communists also took control of Chisinau city council, taking around 51% of the vote.

Analysts say that it was the Liberal Party’s enthusiasm for European integration mixed with harmful structural reforms, a weak economy and increasingly poor relations with its largest trading partner, Russia, that harmed the Liberals, who are also part of the ruling national coalition.

Local elections took place all over the country on Sunday and other results are expected to come in throughout the week.
