Ivory Coast

December poll confirmed

Published

The Ivory Coast’s Cabinet has approved an Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) proposal to hold the next general election on 11th December.

The prime minister had said earlier this month that he wanted the election to take place before 15th December. The election comes after a short civil war in which former president Laurent Gbagbo had to be forcibly removed from the post following a presidential election last December in which his opponent Alassane Ouattara was the recognised winner.

President Ouattara has expressed hope that the election will help to heal some of the wounds between the two sides, however, Gbagbo’s Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) walked out of the electoral commission panel for elections last week.
