Election marathon has started

The three stage election marathon for 508 members of the People’s Assembly has started today.

In this first phase around 17.5 million people will vote in nine of the 27 governorates; Alexandria, Asyut, Cairo, Damietta, Faiyum, Kafr el-Sheikh, Port Said, Red Sea and Luxor. For those candidates who do not reach an absolute majority in this first round there will be a runoff vote on 5th December.

For this first phase voting will take place for 168 of 498 seats (The acting President, Field Marshall Tantawi appoints ten of the 508 seats) and there are 3,809 candidates standing as independents or from one of around 70 political parties.

Voting in this first round will take place over two days with polling stations open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.

The second round of voting for the next nine governorates will take place on 14th December with the final results for all 498 seats known on 13 January 2012.
