Guyana

Election on 28th November

Published

After a false start earlier this year, President Bharrat Jagdeo has moved the general election in Guyana for 28th November.

The election will be for the 65 seat National Assembly as well as regional elections. The Presidential position will also become vacant because it is filled on the basis of the results in the National Assembly elections. Bharrat Jagdeo will not be standing because he has completed two terms in office.

In the 2006 elections the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) took 36 of the 65 seats with the People’s National Congress (PNC) coming second with 22 seats. The PPP has been in power since 1992.
