Election on 31st August

President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has set the date for the next general election in Angola as 31st August.

The election will be to elect a parliament, but the leader of the largest party then goes on to become the president of the country. The last election was in 2008, the first since 1992 following civil war and the result was an outright victory for the MPLA.

The Popular Movement of the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) took 191 of the 220 seats in the National Assembly.

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) came second with 16 seats. Three other parties are represented in the parliament.
