Published

President Nursultan Nazarbayev has signed a decree dissolving parliament and calling new parliamentary elections for 15th January 2012.

The elections to the Majlis were due to be held in the summer next year, however, the president has decided that the time is right to introduce a more democratic multi-party system into the parliament. Currently all of the members of the 98 seat parliament are from his own party, the Nur Otan Party.

The president was re-elected with 95.55% of the vote in April this year and elections for the Majlis were last held on 18th August 2007.
