Elections cancelled

Published

Several newspapers are reporting that the Syrian parliamentary elections which were due to be held in May and then postponed until August may be delayed indefinitely.

SANA, the official Syrian news agency makes no reference to this and it cannot be confirmed, however it seems a likely scenario. SANA is reporting on preparations for the consultative meeting being organised by the National Dialogue Committee which is scheduled to take place on 10th July.

The news agency reports that “The Committee had decided to invite all the national political and intellectual powers and figures to the meeting, which will discuss the already prepared bills, especially those of the laws of the parties, elections, local administrations and the constitution amendment under discussion, mainly Article No.8.” Around 250 people have reportedly been invited.

Several opposition bodies have already said that they will not attend the meeting, including the influential Coordination Body of Syrian opposition parties.
