Elections held but no change expected

Published

A general election is being held today for the 120 seat National Assembly. The Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) of president Ali Bongo is expected to win comfortably; they have been in power for more than 40 years.

The 746,896 voters in this country of 1.5 million people will have a choice of 472 candidates, although the PDG is the only party to put up a full slate of candidates. There are 1854 polling stations and voter turnout is expected to be very low.
