Erdoğan bans Twitter

Published

The Anadolu Agency has confirmed that Turkey has blocked access to the social media site Twitter. There is some indication that Facebook may also have been affected.

The Agency says that the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had made a statement at a campaign rally for local elections later this month that the government would eradicate Twitter. Soon after the Information and Communication Technologies Authority confirmed a court order blocking Twitter because of alleged violations of personal rights and privacy.

Twitter has announced to its roughly 10 million users in Turkey that they can get around the ban by using Twitter through SMS.
