Evaristo Carvalho elected President

Former Prime Minister Evaristo Carvalho has been elected president of São Tomé and Príncipe in the second round runoff although his opponent, incumbent President Manuel Pinto da Costa, had withdrawn from the race.

As a result of the single candidate, turnout was down to 46% but Carvalho took 82% of the vote. The new president is from the same political party, the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) as Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. Since power is shared between the president and prime minister which should lead to greater cooperation between the two offices.

Evaristo Carvalho will take office on 3rd September 2016.
