Fattah el-Sisi to run for President

Minister of Defence, Field Marshall Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has resigned from the military and announced that he will run for president in the forthcoming presidential elections. The election is expected to be held on 17th July 2014.

Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (59) is a career soldier, having graduated from the Egyptian Military Academy in 1977 and worked his way rapidly up the ranks. In 2008 he became Commander of the Northern Military Region-Alexandria and then Director of Military Intelligence and Reconnaissance. He became the youngest member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of Egypt and was a key commander during the presidency of Hosni Mubarak.

In August 2012 El-Sisi was appointed head of the Egyptian Armed Forces by President Mohamed Mursi and was instrumental in the removal of President Mursi in July 2013. He became Minister of Defence and Military Production in August 2012. After the deposing of President Mursi, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi became First Deputy Prime Minister in addition to his other duties.
