First results suggest second round runoff

Published

First results for the presidential election coming out of Guatemala from yesterday’s poll suggest that there will be a second round runoff on 6th November.

Otto Pérez Molina of the Patriotic Front leads with around 14% of counting completed; he is on 33.66%. Manuel Baldizón of the Independent Block Renewed Democratic Freedom Party (LIDER) is on 24.1% and Eduardo Suger of CREO is on 14.83%. The seven other candidates are all running well below ten percent of the vote.

There are no official figures for turnout, but the poll was said to have been largely peaceful with a low number of incidents reported.
