Francisco Guterres elected President of East Timor

Francisco Guterres of the left-wing Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) has won the presidential election in the first round in East Timor.

Guterres, who was beaten by Taur Matan Ruak in the second round of the 2012 presidential election, had an easy win this time taking 59.35% of the vote. His closest opponent, António da Conceição, of the Democratic Party took 30.67% of the vote. Turnout was 54.08%. The result is based upon preliminary figures published by the Secretariado Técnico de Administração Eleitoral (STAE).

Francisco Guterres (62) will take office on 20th May 2017.
