Published

President Mikheil Saakashvili has set the date for the Georgian general election as 1st October.

In 2008 the United National Movement of President Saakashvili won 119 of the 150 seats in the Parliament of Georgia. Since then the government has faced a series of protests in recent times and tycoon-turned-politician Bidzina Ivanishvili is leading the so called Georgian Dream opposition coalition in a bid to defeat the government.

A survey by the American National Democratic Institute in June put the ruling United National Movement on 36%, down from 47% in February and the Georgian Dream on 18%, up 10% on February. The Christian Democrats who came third with six seats and 8.66% of the vote in 2008 are on 3%.
