General election today

Belize is holding a general election today, with the outcome closer than previously expected.

There are 74 candidates vying for the 31 seats in the House of Representatives.

The current government, the United Democratic Party (UDP) have 25 seats from the 2008 elections. In a poll by businessman Derek Aikman (source Amandala Online) the UDP are on 30% of the vote, but with a large number of voters still undecided.

The opposition party, the People’s United Party (PUP) currently hold six seats but are doing much better in the polls, behind the UDP by just four points on 26%.

There are 178,054 voters in the general election and they can vote at 168 polling stations nationwide from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.

Voters will also be choosing from 174 municipal candidates for 65 seats (including Mayors) in Belize City and eight municipalities.
