General election

Published

Voting in a snap general election is taking place over three days, 29th September to 1st October. Outlying islands in the Indian Ocean archipelago voted yesterday and today, with most voters going to the polling stations tomorrow.

The 34 seat National Assembly will almost certainly be won by the incumbent People’s Party following the decision of the opposition party, the Seychelles National Party (SNP) to boycott the election. The only other party contesting the election is a hurriedly put together Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) made up of some SNP members who disagreed with the boycott.

The election was called a year earlier than scheduled which clearly wrong footed the opposition and has led to appeals in the courts.
