Goes to the polls today
9.1 million voters will be entitled to vote for a new president today in Kazakhstan. The country crosses two time zones which means that polling stations will open in the East at 7 a.m. and close in the West at 8 p.m..
The expected winner is the current President, Nursultan Nazarbayev. At the last presidential election in 2005 Nazarbayev took 91.15% of the vote on a turnout of 76.78%. The main concern today is whether voters will bother to turnout, a low poll would hurt the credibility of the election.
The 71 year old President appears to be genuinely appreciated by voters after 21 years in office. Even his three main contenders made complimentary comments about him during the low key campaign, leading some opposition groups to claim that they were stooges.
